Annual pilgrimage to Saint John Armenian Church in Chinsurah

Following years old tradition, on 14 January 2007 pilgrims visited the Saint John Armenian Church in Chinsurah, where Holy Mass was conducted on the Sunday following the date of the birth of Saint John the Baptist.

 

The Armenian Church in Chinsurah, originally built in 1695 and dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, has a historical significance, being the second oldest Church in the Western Bengal and the first Armenian Church in the Far East. 

 

The celebrant of the Holy Mass was Very Rev. Father Oshagan Gulgulian, pastor of the Armenian community in India and the Manager of the Armenian College and Philanthropic Academy (ACPA) in Calcutta. The Mass was attended also by Deacon Tigran Baghumyan, the Administrator of ACPA.

 

Following the Holy Mass, Father Gulgulian deliverd a sermon, in which he referred to the life of Saint John the Baptist and asked for the blessing of this saint in the individual and community life of the Armenians in India.

 

Father Gulgulian stated: ?today is a historical day in the life of the Indian Armenian community, because we have followed the example of our ancestors and have come as pilgrims to Saint John Armenian Church, for the purpose of praying and rejoicing in the Lord. Let us all together vow that we will do all what it takes to preserve our historical monuments in this hospitable land. Let us herald everywhere the noble image of the Armenian”. 
 
On the this blissful occasion the relic of the right hand of Saint John the Baptist was brought to Chinsurah Church from its original location in Saint Nazareth Armenian Church in Calcutta. The right hand was used in the Antasdan ceremony (Blessing of the four corners of the world). All believers kissed and bowed in front of the relic. 

 

Members of the Armenian Community in India, members of the Calcutta Armenian Church Council and students of ACPA took part in this annual pilgrimage.

ՀԱՂՈՐԴԱԳՐՈՒԹՅՈՒՆ – Հունվարի 15, 2007թ.

 

 

Հունվարի 14-ին, Ս. Հովհաննես Կարապետի ծննդյան տոնին հաջորդող կիրակի օրը, ավանդության համաձայն` ուխտի Ս. Պատարագ մատուցվեց Չինսուրայի Ս. Հովհաննես հայկական եկեղեցում, որն Արևմտյան Բենգալիա նահանգի երկրորդ ամենահին քրիստոնեական եկեղեցին է և Ծայրագույն Արևելքի առաջին հայկական եկեղեցին` կառուցված` 1695թ.-ին:

 

Օրվա պատարագիչն էր հնդկահայոց հոգևոր հովիվ և Կալկաթայի Հայոց Մարդասիրական ճեմարանի կառավարիչ Տ. Օշական վրդ. Գյուլգյուլյանը, որին ընկերակցում էր Մայր Աթոռ Սբ. Էջմիածնի միաբան Տիգրան սրկ. Բաղումյանը: Ս. Պատարագի ընթացքում Հայր Սուրբը հավուր պատշաճի քարոզ խոսեց` հայցելով Ս. Հովհաննես Մկրտչի բարեխոսությունը հնդկահայոց գաղութի համար:

 

“Այսօր պատմական օր է հնդկահայ գաղութի համար, քանզի մեր նախնյաց օրինակով կրկին ուխտի ենք եկել Ս. Հովհաննես հայկական եկեղեցին` աղոթելու և վերստին Տիրոջով նորոգվելու համար: Ուստի եկեք միասնաբար աղոթենք և ուխտենք, որ ամեն ինչ պետք է անենք` տեր կանգնելու համար հյուրընկալ այս հողի վրա սփռված մեր արժեքներին` ամենուր ազդարարելով հայ քրիստոնյայի բարի անվան մասին”,-նշեց Օշական վարդապետը:

 

Ուրախալի այս առիթով Կալկաթայի Ս. Նազարեթ հայկական եկեղեցուց դուրս էր բերվել նաև Ս. Հովհաննես Մկրտչի մասունքով Ս. Աջը, որով և Ս. Պատարագի ընթացքում կատարվեց անդաստան: Հավարտ սրբազան արարողության բոլոր մասնակիցներն իրենց խոնարհումը բերեցին սրբի մասունքներին` համբուրելով ատյանում դրված Ս. Ավետարանն ու Ս. Աջը:

 

Ուխտագնացությանը մասնակցում էին Կալկաթայի եկեղեցական խորհրդի անդամները, հնդկահայեր և Մարդասիրական ճեմարանի սաները:
