With great pleasure we received the announcement about republishing the Armenian Directory of Dubai and Northern Emirates this year.
The announcement (see below) says that the publication will take place ?shortly?. We hope that there is one meaning for this word. Last time the data gathering for the same purpose took several months, while the publishing needed more than one year. By the time the end user was able to use the Directory of 2006, the information there were heavily outdated.
On organizational level the initial signs for the new edition do not look good. For example, in the original announcement circulated today (see PDF format here), the fax number in the English version is not correct. Even if rectified with subsequent emails, there still would be individuals who will be sending their data to the wrong number.
Suggestions for the coming edition:
– It is worthwhile to include a proper preface to the Directory (a brief history of the community, would be a good example). The 2006 edition hosted the clich? quotation by writer William Saroyan as a preface. Saroyan?s quotation could be kept if there is a desire to recycle it, but a proper preface would be a good way to introduce this work.
– For the sake of historical accuracy, it is worth mentioning where the Directory is published. The last edition did not have any reference to the publication place, nor did it mention which edition it was (The new edition would be the fourth).
– The surname of our parish priest in the 2006 edition is given as Dekermendjian in English and Deyirmendjian in Armenian. We asked the priest and he confirmed that the English version is wrong.
– The official name of the old directory is ?Armenian Directory in Dubai and the Northern Emirates?, while the official name of the publishing authority is ?Council of the Armenian Community in the Northern Emirates?. For those who do not know, Dubai is considered one of the Northern Emirates (within the Federal structure of the United Arab Emirates). Suggestion: Since the Council?s name is not easy to change, then it is better to change the Directory's name.
We have several other useful suggestions that we will pass to the publishers in due course. We will be happy if they show interest in our comments.

If you wish to bring your contribution to this publication in the form of an advertisement, a full color, A5 format, one page space could be made available to you for the cost of AED 1000, and half page AED 500.
