Congratulatory speech of the Ambassador Armen Melkonian on the occasion of Independence Day

Excellencies,
Distinguished guests,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Dear friends,

Somewhere among you is my daughter Ani. She is 20 years old. Exactly the same age as the Republic of Armenia. As any youngster of her age, she is full of life, energy and dreams for a brighter future. She is confident in herself and ready for big achievements. Just as my country is?

Twenty years ago on September 21, the Armenian people unanimously voted in favor of independence in a national referendum. An independent Armenian State, the Republic of Armenia, a dream of many generations, became reality. The choice of our people was deeply conscientious. We got this independence not by a whim of fortune but we earned it first of all through the self-sacrifice of our forefathers. Our dream came true but along with it came responsibility. From that moment on we became responsible for our own security, economy, culture, our present and future. We proved to the world and ourselves that we have the right and ability to live and create on our own land as we deem right, with our own values.

Neither of the former Soviet Republics had such an unfavorable starting point as was ours. A large part of the country was a disaster zone, devastated after the 1988 earthquake, and we were at the brink of war and in economic blockade. However, ready to assume any difficult task, our people firmly said “Yes” to our independence.

Today, Armenia, notwithstanding all its problems, is an established state and a guarantor of the regional peace and security. Armenia?s weight in the international world is much more than its geographical size thanks to a well-organized and dedicated Armenian Diaspora.

Our most precious possession is the new generation of independence. A generation which represents citizens of a free country and cannot imagine any other status.

In two decades, we have made a huge leap forward, we managed to overcome enormous hardships and now we proudly speak of accomplishments in different spheres of life. We managed to improve our economy and succeed in building a free and democratic society. However there is still much to be done.

Armenia gives great importance to its relations with Egypt. We are confident that the people of Egypt will overcome all difficulties that they face after the January 25th revolution and make their way to a better and prosperous future.

In the past 20 years, Armenia and Egypt have succeeded in establishing excellent political, economic, cultural, educational, and scientific cooperation. Egypt was one of the first countries in the Arab world which recognized the independence of Armenia in 1991. Next year we are going to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Armenia and Egypt signed more than 40 bilateral legal documents, dozens of high level official delegations paid mutual visits, many significant cultural and public events have been occurred, projects of economic cooperation have been worked out by joint efforts.

I avail myself this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude to all those who are contributing to the development of Armenian-Egyptian relations, as well as to the Armenian-Egyptian community who by all means supports the initiatives and undertakings of the Armenian Embassy.

I thank you all for being present today and celebrating together with us the 20th Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Armenia.

Long live the Republic of Armenia!

Long live the Arab Republic of Egypt!
