Summer Course of Armenian Language and Culture in Venice, Italy

This unique course of Armenian Language and Culture takes place in Venice in August every year since 1986.

It is a programme of 65 hours spanned in two weeks from Monday to Saturday with a lot of leisure and cultural activities as duduk and Armenian dance lessons, Armenian songs, conferences, visits to St. Lazarus and Armenian Venice, visits to Italian main cities of art, etc…. A unique experience to share the Armenian heritage with Armenians and non-Armenians, coming from all over the world. A unique experience to enjoy Venice and its amazing beauty which still preserves a lot of vestiges of its relations with Armenian communities.

1st Week (1st-4th August)

Thursday, 8.00 am – Breakfast & Departure from residences
8.45-10.00 am – Official Opening of the Intensive Summer Course at the Patriarchal Seminar (beyond the Church of Madonna della Salute, Dorsoduro)
10.00 am-13.15 (1.15 pm) – Starting of the lessons

Friday, 8.45-13.15 (1.15 pm) – Classrooms
20.45 (8.45 pm) – Փոխադարձ ծանօթութեան Ուրախ երեկոյ / Evening party for mutual knowledge offered by the Padus-Araxes Association and organized by the teachers and secretary staff.

Saturday, 8.45 am-1.15 pm – Classrooms

Sunday, 11.00 am – Liturgy of the Holy Mass / Սուրբ Պատարագ (Surb Patarag) at the Medieval Armenian church of the Holy Cross / Սուրբ Խաչ (Surb Khach)

2nd Week (5th-11th August)

Monday, 8.45 am-1.15 pm – Classrooms
15.00 (3.00 pm) Group visit to Surb Ghazar, the Monastic Island of San Lazzaro in Laguna, Headquarters of the Mekhitarist Order and cradle of the modern Armenian Renaissance in the 18th century.

Tuesday, 8.45 am-1.15 pm – Classrooms
18.30 (6.30 pm)-20.30 (8.30 pm) – Workshop by Prof. Dr. Mihran DABAG (Ruhr-Universitaet Bochum, Director of the Institute for Diaspora Studies and Genocide Research) on “Narrated World – Experienced World. Tradition, Ritual and History in the Diaspora” (Part 1)
20.45 (8.45 pm) – SPRITZ HAYEREN, a happy hour for students and teachers to promote an active language production (We-Crociferi).

18.30 (6.30 pm)-20.30 (8.30 pm) – Workshop by Prof. Dr. Mihran DABAG (Ruhr-Universitaet Bochum, Director of the Institute for Diaspora Studies and Genocide Research) on ” Narrated World – Experienced World. Tradition, Ritual and History in the Diaspora” (Part 2)

20.45 (8.45 pm) – Film screening “The Stateless Diplomat” by Mimi MALAYAN (USA 2018), award-winner at the Pomegranate Film Festival in Toronto. There will be an introduction to the film either by the director herself or a representative as well as after the film also time for a discussion.

Sunday, 11.00 am – Liturgy of the Holy Mass / Սուրբ Պատարագ (Surb Patarag) at the Medieval Armenian church of the Holy Cross / Սուրբ Խաչ (Surb Khach)

18.00 (6.00 pm) – Visit tour to the Armenian Venice with Dr. Evelyn KORSCH. Meeting at the columns on St Mark’s Square at 17.45 (5.45 pm)

Tuesday, 8.45 am-1.15 pm – Classrooms
20.45 (8.45 pm) ‒ Film screening “A Piece of Sky” (Կտոր մը երկինք) by Henrik MALYAN (Soviet Union 1980), in the original version in Armenian. At the end of the film, there will be time for a discussion conducted by Artsvi Bakhchinyan.

Thursday, no lessons. Feast day for all – Our Lady’s Assumption

Sunday, 11.00 am – Feast of Our Lady’s Assumption, in the Armenian rite. Solemn Divine Liturgy of the Holy Mass / Սուրբ Պատարագ (Surb Patarag) at the Monastery of San Lazzaro, celebrated by H.G. Mgr. Levon Zekiyan.

Monday, 10.00 am check-out – Departure day

Lessons of Duduk and Armenian Traditional Dance will be offered to those who are interested in participating in the afternoons. Generally, 4-hour lessons per week are given alternatively (duduk on Mondays and Fridays, Armenian Dance on Tuesdays and Thursdays). Those who wish to join the course of duduk are warmly invited to bring with them their instrument (it is also possible to buy the instrument from the instructor, M° Aram Ipekdjian).
