Gemma Champ published a reveiw in Abu Dhabi's daily (“The National”, 12 January 2009) on Maxim Shostakovich's recent musical event in Abu Dhabi. In the review Champ says: “The incredibly young Sergey Khachatryan is, at 23, a formidable talent, with a mastery of bowing, precision of fingering and perfection of pitch that astounds the listener. The silvery tone of his 1708 Stradivarius perfectly suits his agile style, while still giving him the tonal depth needed for sawing out the folky dance melodies of the second movement. Those ethereal, delicate harmonics of the cadenza in the first movement, the deftly managed double-stopping that looked oh-so easy in his hands and the sweet, wistful tone in the slower passages were all charmingly achieved.” |

With great pleasure we received the announcement about republishing the Armenian Directory of Dubai and Northern Emirates this year. The announcement (see below) says that the publication will take place ?shortly?. We hope that there is one meaning for this word. Last time the data gathering for the same purpose took several months, while the publishing needed more than one year. By the time the end user was able to use the Directory of 2006, the information there were heavily outdated. On organizational level the initial signs for the new edition do not look good. For example, in the original announcement circulated today (see PDF format here), the fax number in the English version is not correct. Even if rectified with subsequent emails, there still would be individuals who will be sending their data to the wrong number. Read more |

Azad-Hye Special Annual reports of community life are important research and decision making tools. They enable us to stay up to date on community's yearly outlook, understand the present situation and make comparisons with past tracks. They help us in taking decisions about the future course of events. It will be very good if we as a community start adopting the practice of preparing annual reports of community life with the aim of making them accessible to the public. It is not enough to prepare reports for close meetings and then shelve them or throw them in the archives, thus making them useful for future researchers only. The content of community annual reports should be the possession of the public. Through these reports we can know how well the community was doing in the past year, not only on financial level, which is easy to quantify, but also on moral and other stands (educational, social, communicative etc.), which need more expertise to assess. Hratch Brunsuzian and Shakeh Grogan have vowed to support the “Sponsor an Article” project, which aims at enriching Azad-Hye with creative and translated articles, in three language (English, Armenian and Arabic), with special emphasis on Armenian. Read more about the project here. Until today Hratch Brunsuzian has sponsored the following articles: 1) Zohrab the royal photographer 2) Monument of Gratitude to Arabs 3) Call to support the fundraising campaign for the Monument of Gratitude to Arabs 4) Garo Arslanian: My true hope is to find the same kind of eagerness to read and write in my students Shakeh Grogan has sponsored the following articles: 1) Reverend Haroutioun Selimian elected president of the Armenian Evangelical World Council 2) Haroutioun Tenguerian: The roots are talking 3) A well known name in all Armenian households: Arevig 4) Shoghagat Apartian: my first experiment was to arrange Gomidas songs to jazz
Their commitment will continue throughout 2009. Since its beginning in 2003, Azad-Hye has produced thousands of pages in three languages English, Armenian and Arabic. The main language in use is English, while several articles appear also in Armenian. The Arabic website (www.azad-hye.org) enjoys the status of a complete website. There is always a need to reward journalists and writers. By doing so we can guarantee the creation of a higher quality of written material. There is also a need to make articles accessible in more than one of the above mentioned languages. Posting articles in Armenian is particularly an important duty. We hope that one day the Armenian National Councils in the UAE understand our concerns and come forward with their support in this important task. The idea behind the Sponsor an Article project is to find people who can sponsor writing and translating articles. Be a sponsor by writing to [email protected] |
