The Board of Trustees of the Ohannesian Armenian Weekly School in Sharjah has formed a group of female teachers who will voluntarily work on organizing off-school activities, with the aim of bringing the students, their parents and friends of the school together.
In an announcement circulated on 18 January 2009, the Board of Trustees expresses its belief, that “with these activities the Armenian Community center will get more vibrant, Armenian children will be able – through games, movies and competition – to accumulate more knowledge, feel closer to their friends, to love and feel attached to the school, the church and any other Armenian institution in general”.
The circular emphasizes that “through dinner, music, songs and games, a club atmosphere will be created for the Armenian parents and friends of the school”. Read more
Chritch and Linda Stephanian participate in Fanaan group exhibition
We are pleased to announce the participation of two Abu Dhabi based armenian artists, Chritch and Linda Stephanian, to the “Fanaan” group exhibition to be held in Ghaf gallery in Abu Dhabi, between 18th and 29th of January 2009.
Fanaan is a group of Abu Dhabi based artists established in 2008 with the purpose of bringing together and cultivating an artistic community in Abu Dhabi. The group currently comprises 10 artists from diverse backgrounds.
We cordially invite you for the Opening Reception of this exhibition on Sunday 18th January 2009 at 8.00 PM.
Looking forward meeting you there.
“The incredibly young Sergey Khachatryan is, at 23, a formidable talent, with a mastery of bowing, precision of fingering and perfection of pitch that astounds the listener. The silvery tone of his 1708 Stradivarius perfectly suits his agile style, while still giving him the tonal depth needed for sawing out the folky dance melodies of the second movement.
Those ethereal, delicate harmonics of the cadenza in the first movement, the deftly managed double-stopping that looked oh-so easy in his hands and the sweet, wistful tone in the slower passages were all charmingly achieved.”
With great pleasure we received the announcement about republishing the Armenian Directory of Dubai and Northern Emirates this year.
The announcement (see below) says that the publication will take place ?shortly?. We hope that there is one meaning for this word. Last time the data gathering for the same purpose took several months, while the publishing needed more than one year. By the time the end user was able to use the Directory of 2006, the information there were heavily outdated.
On organizational level the initial signs for the new edition do not look good. For example, in the original announcement circulated today (see PDF format here), the fax number in the English version is not correct. Even if rectified with subsequent emails, there still would be individuals who will be sending their data to the wrong number. Read more
Previously we had covered the celebration on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Sharjah Armenian Church (see our report here). You can find below a one minute video clip from the celebration day (12 December 2008), showing the participants chanting “Cilicia” in the church yard, before the blessing of the sacrifice.
Education is one of the first examples where we can use modern technologies. If we cannot secure the Armenian school physically, we can have it virtually.
On Friday 19th of December 2008, the Armenian Community Hall in Sharjah (United Arab Emirates) hosted a presentation by Dr. Yervant Zorian, Member of Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) Central Board of Directors and President of AGBU Virtual College, on the subject of “The Armenian Virtual College”.

Annual reports of community life are important research and decision making tools. They enable us to stay up to date on community's yearly outlook, understand the present situation and make comparisons with past tracks. They help us in taking decisions about the future course of events.
It will be very good if we as a community start adopting the practice of preparing annual reports of community life with the aim of making them accessible to the public. It is not enough to prepare reports for close meetings and then shelve them or throw them in the archives, thus making them useful for future researchers only.
The content of community annual reports should be the possession of the public. Through these reports we can know how well the community was doing in the past year, not only on financial level, which is easy to quantify, but also on moral and other stands (educational, social, communicative etc.), which need more expertise to assess. Hratch Brunsuzian and Shakeh Grogan have vowed to support the “Sponsor an Article” project, which aims at enriching Azad-Hye with creative and translated articles, in three language (English, Armenian and Arabic), with special emphasis on Armenian.
Read more about the project here.
Until today Hratch Brunsuzian has sponsored the following articles:
Shakeh Grogan has sponsored the following articles:
Their commitment will continue throughout 2009.
Since its beginning in 2003, Azad-Hye has produced thousands of pages in three languages English, Armenian and Arabic.
The main language in use is English, while several articles appear also in Armenian. The Arabic website (www.azad-hye.org) enjoys the status of a complete website.
There is always a need to reward journalists and writers. By doing so we can guarantee the creation of a higher quality of written material. There is also a need to make articles accessible in more than one of the above mentioned languages. Posting articles in Armenian is particularly an important duty.
We hope that one day the Armenian National Councils in the UAE understand our concerns and come forward with their support in this important task.
The idea behind the Sponsor an Article project is to find people who can sponsor writing and translating articles.
Be a sponsor by writing to [email protected]
Azad-Hye covers subjects in English, Armenian and Arabic languages.
1- Choose an article for translation either from Azad-Hye website or from other external sources. The article should be consistent with the main topics covered by Azad-Hye.
1- Choose a subject you would like to see published. The subject should be related to the Armenian reality. Subjects from the Middle East Armenian communities are most welcome.
IMPORTANT NOTE: YOUR NAME WILL BE MENTIONED AT THE END OF THE ARTICLE AS A SPONSOR.
Contact us and sponsor an article. The rates are very reasonable.
