Question: The Embassy told me that I was approved for the Armenian citizenship and my next step should be to go to OVIR (Passports and Visas Police Directorate on Until recently (June 2010) applicants were obliged to register themselves in the local registry office of their chosen home address. Fortunately, this complicated procedure is not required any more. 1) For female applicants: Submit the passport application to the OVIR officer. The officer will define a day (usually in the coming 3 working days) to take the oath, sign the documents and receive the passport as a citizen of Normal passports cost about US$ 15, while urgent passports cost about US$ 60 (although in most cases, as first-time applicant, you cannot practically benefit from the urgent option). Note that OVIR officers are able to locate your file based on your name; a practice useful in case you do not remember your file number or are not notified by the Embassy with your number. The queue in OVIR (in front of Arevik Petrosyan's office) is out of control and lacks administrative coordination. People with trivial enquiries and others with major issues stand in the same queue, often returning back to the same queue more than once on a given day. Take with you a bottle of water and be very patient. Try to arrange babysitting for your children, as there are no provisions for kids or pregnant women or senior individuals. The most interesting moment in this process is the oath taking ceremony. Do not let documentation technicalities spoil your genuine feelings related to the moment. The Department of Criminal Investigation arrested an Armenian gang of two women and a man who stole from duty free shops at airports in several countries. A woman-like walk by a suspect gave the criminals? away and opened them to monitoring by the police. The modus operandi of the gang was to steal jewels from duty free shops and fly out. Police tracked the suspects and surveillance cameras showed a man who walked like a woman. He was seen walking into a shop and writing his name on a draw coupon after stealing jewels from a shop. The police checked the coupons and found all the passengers were residents except the suspect. The group was seen flying in and out of several GCC countries and the arrests were made last Friday. Major Ahmed Al Merri, Director of Criminal Investigation, said, the police received a complaint that they found jewellery worth Dh300,000 missing from the shop. He said, the thieves had tricked an employee by pretending not to know each other and diverted his attention when he showed them a large collection. The gang members confessed they stole from duty free at airports and left on flights to other Gulf countries, only to return to Dubai. Khaleej Times, Dubai, 20 August 2010 (URL) |

The journalists had the chance to meet with high ranking officials in Yerevan, such as Hovik Aprahamyan (National Assembly Speaker), Armen Gevorgyan (Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Territorial Administration), Arman Kirakossian (Deputy Foreign Minister), Armen Movsisyan (Energy Minister), Ara Bedrosyan (Deputy Minister of Economy and Minister of Tourism) and others.
