Sharjah and Northern Emirates Armenian Directory Friday, October 15, 2010

Sharjah and Northern Emirates Armenian DirectoryThe newest edition of Armenian Directory in Dubai and the Northern Emirates was published recently. The directory comes in 143 glossy pages, with a painting of the Saint Gregory the Illuminator Church in Sharjah as cover page next to a silhouette of Burj Khalifa landmark in Dubai.

The Directory includes the names and contact details (company name, post office box, home and office telephone numbers, mobile telephone number and emails) of those who filled the data collection form. Each family is posted in a separate entry with unmarried children.

A form is provided at the last page for those who would like to declare their new addresses or make changes for future editions.

The first pages contain info about the Armenian Prelacy of Kuwait and the Arabian Gulf Countries and the Saint Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Apostolic Church in Sharjah, UAE.

The Directory is funded by advertising sponsors. Copy price is AED 30. You can get your copy by contacting the Armenian Community Center in Sharjah at 06-5660320.

Months before the publication of the Directory Azad-Hye sent a letter (see below) to the National Council suggesting the following:

1- To add private websites of individuals (if available).
2- To introduce a new page called Armenian Media in UAE, where information and contact details would be posted about existing the Armenian media in UAE as follows: a) Aztarar, the bulletin of the Armenian Prelacy of Kuwait and the Arabian Gulf Countries, which is distributed in UAE in the form of electronic newsletter, b)
Nshanag website edited by Nishan Basmajian and c) our website Azad-Hye.

The National Council accepted the first suggestion but preferred to disregard the second suggestion. We hope that in the future not only the media gets its own page, but also some professional pages are added such as a list of physicians, bankers, manufacturers etc. It would be more useful if an electronic form of the directory is prepared too.

Nishan Basmajian: Gratitude to border authorities Friday, October 01, 2010

Nishan Basmajian, an Armenian who lives in Sharjah, UAE and has the www.nshanag.net website, recently traveled to Armenia using (unknowingly) an expired 10 year residency visa, usually granted for Armenians who have foreign citizenship. As a Syrian passport holder he should have secured visa before arrival in Armenia. Despite the fact that he lacked visa, the officers in Zvartnots airport treated him respectfully and did all what is possible to accommodate him in the airport until visa is issued from the competent authorities in OVIR. In his note Basmajian wanted to thank the border authorities in Armenia for their considerate attitude.

Rosaline SaatdjianNon-Muslims during Ramadan

“Ramadan is definitely a special time for all of us. I'm not a Muslim myself, but it's interesting to live in an Arab country at this time of the year, and observe people's traditions and customs. I enjoy a lot of things during this month, in particular the atmosphere, Ramadan tents and of course the food,” Rosaline Saatdjian, an Armenian expatriate and long-term Abu Dhabi resident, said.

“People also tend to be nicer during Ramadan and more giving. It teaches you how to be kinder and more considerate and caring of others,” she added.
