We have announced about the new year event organized by the Council of the Armenian Community in Dubai and Northern Emirates (see details here).

For those who are willing to spend more money and enjoy the companionship of Armenians from the motherland, Armenchik's event is recommended. Armenchik is going to perform on 31 December 2010 to a full audience in Grand Hyatt hotel (one of the well-known hotels in Dubai). Entry ticket is minimum US$400, based on the seating location. Bookings should be made through specially appointed agencies in Yerevan (no direct bookings through the hotel are accepted). Priority is given to people coming from Armenia as the organizers would like to make money by selling airline tickets and room nights in Dubai.

Armenchick is a US-based popular Armenian singer who won “Singer of the Year” award organized by Armenian Music Awards in 2009.

Statistics released by DTCM (Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing in Dubai) show that more than 25 thousand citizens of Armenia spend their leisure time annually in Dubai.

FlyDubai airline company of Dubai will provide opportunity for more travels between the two countries. Armavia used to sell roundtrip tickets to Yerevan at the rate of US$450-550, but rates have come down after the introduction of FlyDubai. The country is still considered an expensive destination compared to other destinations available for UAE residents.

New Year party will take place on Friday 31 of December 2010 at the Dubai Intercontinental Festival City.

A Special program for children will start at 8pm till 9:30pm performed by Chake Baghdassarian Accompanied by Nayra Baghdassarian. Santa Claus will be there to give children their special gift.

Program will continue for grown ups with singer Kevork Madarian, accompanied by Seto Baghdasarian.

Cultural Committee

Narek Duryan family comes originally from Jerusalem. His father is the famous conductor Ohan Duryan. Narek Duryan and his family left Armenia during Soviet times in 1980 and settled in Paris. In recent times Duryan has reestablished his relationship with Armenia and he performs there frequently.

Ara Jouharian's poem dedicated to his father Garabed Jouharian (1919-2010) has drawn comments from readers.

Խոր ու մտածել տուող այս բանաստեղծութիւնը իւրաքանչիւր ընթերցողի պիտի մղէ ինքնամփոփուելու ու վերատեսութեան ենթարկելու ինքզինք, իր շրջապատը եւ մարդկային ու անմարդկային զանազան երեւոյթներ պիտի պարզուին աչքին դիմաց ու երեւակայութեան մէջ, պիտի յիշէ մէկ-մէկ իր ունեցած անմարդկային վերաբերմունքը թերեւս, կամ փառք տայ Աստուծոյ որ հարկ եղած ատեն ցուցաբերած է մարդկային վերաբերմունք։

Nishan Basmajian commented:

Principal Nishan Basmajian in the below letter thanks all participants and asks parents to explain their children the meaning of pan Armenian fund raising campaigns.

Sharjah: 12th anniversary celebrations of the Armenian Church

The 12th anniversary was celebrated at St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Church in Sharjah on Friday, November 12th 2010. 

His Grace Archbishop Goriun Babian, Catholicosal Representative for the Diocese of Kuwait and the Arab Gulf Countries blessed the meat and salt on Thursday 11 November 2010. Preparation of madagh started from the evening until next day morning.

On Friday 12 November 2010, Holy Mass was celebrated and sermon was delivered by Archbishop Babian.

A new painting of Virgin Mary and the child Jesus (a digital reproduction of a painiting from Echmiadzin) was blessed. It will be positioned on the right wall of the church.

Father Aram Deyirmendjian was honored with a special gontag.  

Madaghorhnek took place at 13:30

Archbishop Babian informed the believers that he will be going leaving the Parish next year and will be going to Antelias to continue his scientific and academic work.

Armenian Apostolic St. Gregory the Illuminator Church Council

Azad-Hye was appointed as member of the organizing committee of the 5th pan Armenian Media Conference (12-16 October 2010). Founder and Editor Hrach Kalsahakian submitted a study to the conference titled “Armenian electronic media in the Arab countries“, which was discussed during the 3rd day's panel session (14 October 2010) through the first Dubai – Stepanakart live communication bridge.  

On 16 October 2010 Azad-Hye Middle East Armenian Portal won Hayastan All Armenian Fund's prize for mass media.

On 19 and 21 October 2010 Vatche Boulghourjian's “The Fifth Column” (Հինգերորդ Զօրասիւն) was displayed in Abu Dhabi as part of the Abu Dhabi Film Festival 2010.

Vatche Boulghourjian was born in Kuwait. He is a Lebanese filmmaker and video artist based in Beirut and New York. He has directed, shot and edited several shorts, experimental films and documentaries focusing on the politics and society of the Middle East. He graduated from New York University?s Tisch School of the Arts. The Fifth Column (2010), his thesis film, was awarded a grant from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won a prize. His other films include Noble Sacrifice (2002), Night, She Said (2005), Good Soldiers (2006), Canto (2008), Ali the Iraqi (2008) and Life by the Horns (2010).

His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, UAE Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah received in Sharjah on 07 October 2010 the Armenian Ambassador to UAE Vahagn Melikian.

Sheikh Sultan and Armenian envoy discussed ways to boost the bilateral relations in the areas of economy and tourism.

Anahit Bobikyan and Vahe Mkrtchyan were invited to participate as interpreters in the the “Third Annual Interregional Workshop on Promoting Law Enforcement and Judicial Cooperation among Source, Transit and Destination Countries in response to Human Trafficking in Central Asia”, which was held in Millennium hotel in Abu Dhabi, 26 – 28 October 2010.

The two interpreters were invited in collaboration with Azad-Hye.

Aline Panoyan, teacher of Armenian language and literature in the Mekhitarist Armenian School in Aleppo, visited UAE in October 2010 as part of Parev Emirates program.

Panoyan is honored with Armenian Prime Minister's Medal on the occasion of the Teachers' Day (2009) for her contribution in educating the Diaspora Armenian children and in preserving their national identity (click right picture).
