Dear Parents

We are pleased to announce that the Council and Temagan of the Armenian Community in the Northern Emirates have started a study to consider opening the Sharjah Ohanesian fulltime school based on a pledge made by Mr and Mrs Ohanesian to donate 2 million Dirhams to the project during the 28th May Celebrations in 2006.

The aim of Mr. and Mrs. Ohanessian is to open a fulltime school in the “St. Gregory the Illuminator” church complex in Sharjah, UAE. The project also aims to keep the one-day school in the same building but independent of the new school.

The study proposes to start with Kindergarten KG1, KG2 and primary 1 & 2, whilst aiming to add higher levels gradually.

We kindly request you to fill the attached questionnaire (click the link below) and return it to the council by the end of April 2008.

Armenian desert safari Thursday, March 06, 2008

Armenian Desert Safari 2008HyeLounge and Hayer Groups kicked of their new campaign together and organized Armenian Desert Safari which took place on 29th February 2008 in Al Aweer (Dubai).

Around 120 Armenians gathered in Dubai and Sharjah and made the trip to the pick up point in three coaches, followed by dune bashing tour through the desert, reaching the final destination around 5:30 pm. On arrival to the camp, guests were directed towards a specially designated section decorated with Armenian flags and presented with memorabilia hats designed and labeled with a truly patriotic logo ?Proud 2 be Armenian?.

Whilst waiting for the delicious barbeque, the positive energy of attendees was very obvious as visitors participated in tattooing of traditional hanna designs, camel riding, quad biking, taking endless photos, singing Armenian songs and some even joined the exotic belly dancer in her performance.

Whilst for some people this was the first time they attend a desert safari, to have it done in Armenian style made the occasion even more special. Throughout the day HyeLounge and Hayer received numerous messages of appreciation and encouragement to continue organizing similar events in the same spirit and dedication. Read more…

Armenian Annual Ball in Dubai Saturday, February 09, 2008

Armenian Annual Ball 2008Azad-Hye special

The Armenian Annual Ball in Dubai has been one of the most anticipated social events in this booming city. This year the event took place on 31st January 2008, with the presence of 450 persons.

Dubai is known for its daily cultural, social and entertainment life, attracting tourists from many countries. Burj Al-Arab, The Palm, Madinat Jumeirah, Global Village, Festival City and (in the near future) Dubailand, Falcon City etc, will be the highlights on the agenda of millions of tourists visiting this bustling Middle Eastern hub. But for the residents there are limited events with local flavor and more intimate nature, one of these being the Armenian Annual Ball.

The organizers of the event have managed to market it successfully to non-Armenian public. More than half of the attendants are friends of the Armenian community, partners and associates who have business and social relationship with them. This reflects the spirit of Dubai, where hundreds of nationalities live together in a harmonious way. Read more.

Hayer and Hye lounge groups

Azad-Hye Note: “Hye Lounge” (est. 2007) and “Hayer” (est. 2008) are two groups of young Armenians. Majority of their members are from Dubai and Sharjah. Both groups were formed on independent basis. However, they gained instant recognition, mostly due to the fact that they addressed the present day social needs of young Armenians in cosmopolitan cities. The National Council in Sharjah is trying to find ways to bring both groups under its umbrella, with only partial success thus far.

Seza Aslanian: Coming up roses Friday, January 18, 2008

Seza AslanianA. Hester meets with Seza Aslanian, owner of “Desert Rose” boutique in Wafi Mall (Dubai), to talk new fashion designers on the rise in the local market.

Any stereotypes one might have of fashion industry divas definitely don't apply to Seza Aslanian. Bright, chatty, informed and driven, this entrepreneurial lady is a supremely likeable bundle of energy who puts the fun back into funky.

Owner of the Desert Rose boutique, and the woman responsible for bringing Miss Sixty to Dubai, Aslanian has always had a love affair with fashion. “I have always loved clothes,” she says. “I have always been very close to my mum, and I grew up girly.” She proves the point by adjusting her pretty peasant dress (a Millie Rostock design). Comment on article: Kev Orkian performs in Dubai

To the concerned:

I'll attend (God willing) the show with family and friends. Let us (Armenians in UAE) be at Madinat Theatre hall the days of the performance. This is a good opportunity for the Cultural Committee of the community to try to organize a performancre in the Keusseyan hall in Sharjah at an affordable price. In this respect a reportage can be sent to the Armenian Newspapers in Beirut, Aleppo, Europe etc.

Azad Hye, thanks for announcing the event in the website, I would request you to try to organize an interview with Mr Kevorkian. Let us not forget the fact that it is difficult to ask Celebrities the 11th hour to allocate time for anything unscheduled, therefore it is advisable to act from today and be in contact with him and the organizers of the events, if, of course, the concerned committees have the intention to organize what suggested above.

Madinat Theatre is trying (indirectly) to make the interested in art and culture feel the Armenian cultural presence in the country; It is, therefore, our duty to take advantage of this, at the same time to reciprocate to the gesture by being physically present in the theatre hall. On another hand, by inviting the GUEST and the responsible organizers of Madinat event to the church, by showing them the warmth any Armenian deserves and making him perform in our hall, we give him the feeling to be proud of being Armenian and that he isn't anymore a guest but HE IS AT HOME.

Thank you,

Nishan Basmajian
