January 2008 Armenian community events. Saturday, December 29, 2007

Details about the Christmas Eve Holy Mass, Epiphay Holy Mass and the Blessing of the Water are available in the Events Calendar.

The Blessing of the Water

Even though this is not a feast by definition-being a mere service or office-it is considered one, as it commemorates the Baptism of Christ. It takes place on the Nativity Day, following the Divine Liturgy. In various places it is a custom to perform churorhnek at a river, lake, or sea, which is a more prevalent custom among the Greeks. We perform churorhnek in church.

See announcement below by the Caretaking Body of Sharjah's Saint Grigor the Illuminator Church, regarding the Blessing of the Water service which will take place immediately after the Holy Mass.

Hye Lounge September 2007

Azad-Hye Special

Social networking amongst UAE Armenians witnessed a great leap in 2007, especially with the advent of Facebook. This was obvious mainly in the circles of the young UAE Armenians, who were deprived from an organized life in the last few years.

Members of the Legislative and National Councils may quote several factors behind the lack of Armenian youth gatherings in recent times. “The youth are indifferent”, “they have different interests”, “they are not interested in traditional events”, etc, are some of the excuses in circulation. No serious effort has been made though to understand the present day needs of the youth.

This year the Community?s Christmas bazaar took place in three different locations: Dubai (30 November), Al Ain (2 December) and Sharjah (7-8 December).

Taking this opportunity we met with several members in the Community, who were the active force behind these festive events:

Nirva Narguizian:
How long it takes to prepare the Christmas bazaar?
This kind of work requires several months of preparatory work. Especially the last month is important and needs extensive attention and follow-up. We had ten volunteer ladies and two young girls involved with us this year. We would have wished to have more young volunteers. Let us hope for more volunteers next year. Read more

Global tales of Armenians Friday, December 14, 2007

By Abbas Al Lawati (Gulf News Staff Reporter)

A little bit of Armenia

As an ancient people who have spanned the globe, the Armenians have found a unique way to preserve their identity and yet adapt to new cultures as they moved from country to country for three thousand years. Gulf News looks deeper into the 4.000 strong community in the UAE

Out of the eleven million Armenians in the world, only three million live in the Republic of Armenia. The rest constitute a multicultural diaspora in all corners of the world.

Despite having assimilated well into most of their adopted countries as a result of migration and displacement, the Armenian diaspora has remained distinct in maintaining its identity while celebrating its diversity.

The UAE is one of the few places where Armenians from around the world meet. There is said to have been an Armenian presence in the country since the 1960s. Read more
