An example of absence of leadership and weak determination More than two years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Harout and Haigan Ohannessian, the well-known benefactors of the Armenian weekly Ohannessian school of Sharjah (UAE), pledged to donate 2 million UAE dirhams (about US$ 550.000) for the upgrading of the school from weekly to daily. This generous financial commitment created an emotional wave inside the community and many thought that time has come to realize the dream of having the second daily Armenian school in the Gulf region (a daily school functions in Kuwait since the late 1960s). This was an exceptionally welcome news for a community that still preserves, to a large extent, the Armenian language and identity. The majority of the Armenian population in the UAE has come from traditional Middle Eastern communities that highly value the importance of the daily Armenian school and know that without it, the process of preserving the national spirit will remain incomplete. The Armenian Weekly school of Abu Dhabi has started its new school year after a delay of two weeks, during which a completely new administration was introduced to manage the school. Pakrad Balabanian was invited to be the Principal of the school. The previous Principal and several teachers (one of them with 30 years record service), left the school, after bitter disagreements with certain members of the Council of the Armenian Community (Varchutyun). They were not even awarded letters of acknowledgment or appreciation for their long-term devotion. Read all |

Co-Founder and Chairman of ArmTech Congress Tony Moroyan transitted via Dubai in August 2009. Azad-Hye met him in the Festival City and had an interesting interview. Zareh Tutunjian of Systronics (Dubai, UAE) attended the meeting in his capacity as ArmTech 2009 Program Committee member. Azad-Hye (represented by Hrach Kalsahakian) is involved in ArmTech 2009 activities and other future ArmTech events as Middle East Regional Co-Chair (other Co-Chairs are Zareh Tutunjian from the UAE and Maurice Kelechian from Lebanon). Excerpts from Tony Moroyan's interview in relation with the UAE: “What we are doing now, is to add a third leg to Yerevan and Silicon Valley, which is Moscow. Another leg could be Paris, yet another one could be the United Arab Emirates. Indeed, the UAE is important for Armenia, since it?s the centre of the Middle East. It is becoming the heart for high-tech. Read complete interview here. Visit the website: www.armtechcongress.com If you would like to be involved in ArmTech activities please contact Azad-Hye. |

The diaspora have carried along their family stories By Abbas Al Lawati Dubai: Hrach Kalsahakian's grandfather, Garabed, was one of 4,000 Armenians whose ancestors settled in Kessab, Ottoman Syria, many generations ago. Following the First World War, the town fell under the French mandate of Syria but only after half its Armenian population was either killed or marched out to as far as East of Syria and Jordan by Ottoman troops, according to the accounts of its inhabitants. Garabed however survived, and his descendants, forming part of the eight million strong Armenian diaspora, have since moved from country to country, taking with them their family stories. Read all |

Long time resident of Abu Dhabi, Mrs. Tamar Topjian Der-Ohannessian, who has served also as principal of the one-day Armenian school in Abu Dhabi for more than two decades, is known for her translation work from Armenian to English. Her first has been a book about Armenian political and military figure Drastamat Kanayan (commonly known as Dro), written by his close associate Simon Vratsian, the last Prime Minister of the First Republic (1918-1920). The 126-page book, titled ?Tempest-born Dro?, was published in 2000 by the Armenian Apostolic Church of America. This was followed by a booklet titled ?St. Gregory the Enlightener and the Conversion of Armenia? (85 pages, Antelias, 2001), originally written by Rev. Fr. Barthev Gulumian and published on the occasion of the 1700th anniversary of the adoption of Christianity as the state religion in Armenia. At the time, Der-Ohannessian was member of the locally formed committee in Abu Dhabi for the same purpose and the above-mentioned work was part of her contribution to the joint commemorative effort.
