Antranig Daghlian, a graduate of Yerevan Polytechnic, an architect by profession, has lived in the United Arab Emirates and the Gulf states for more than three decades. Four years after the publishing of his memoirs, Azad-Hye met Mr. Daghlian and asked him about the past, present and future of the Armenian diaspora in the world generally and in the UAE in particular. Could you describe the activities of the Armenian Cultural Association of Abu Dhabi and how it was initially formed? First, let me say that, in general, we have not been a united and stable community in the United Arab Emirates. Most of us come here in pursuit of a job, stay and leave after several years. On 25 September 2009 a meeting was held in the building of the Armenian Prelacy of Kuwait, with the participation of representatives of all active religious, national, social and sports organizations in the community. An Open Letter was issued as a result of this meeting, addressed to the President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan. The letter was forwarded to Vahagn Melikian, the Ambassador of Armenia in the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait, with the request to deliver it to the Armenian authorities. Note: A similar letter was issued in Sharjah in the name of the Legislative and Executive Council members in the United Arab Emirates. However, the UAE Armenian representatives did not convene any meeting before issuing their Open Letter. This leads us to assume that the representatives were contacted by telephone (some may argue that there was no need to contact them, as the Open Letter was forwarded from the Kuwait meeting and would have been circulated anyway). Our view is that, in crucial moments like the one we are experiencing now, we should not ignore the democratic practices that give more sense and credibility to our expressions. |

By Anand Sagar Nothing is more tragic than a lack of ?historical consciousness? as the Armenians know only too well and as was highlighted rather convincingly during a recent academic conference in Beirut – the first of its kind in the Middle East. The main thrust of the conference, organised by the Armenian National Committee of the Middle East (ANCME) in collaboration with Beirut?s Haigazian University, was to ensure that the Armenian Genocide is not dismissed as a ?forgotten genocide?. And that, because an estimated 1.5 million Armenian citizens of the former Ottoman Empire (presently Turkey) had lost their lives in the ?Holocaust? – during and just after the World War I. And because, any tragedy of this nature and on this scale must never be reduced to a mere obscure footnote in history. Read more |

In a rather strange interview with Day.AZ Azeri information website, Mr. Samir Iman, the head of the Azerbaijani community in the United Arab Emirates, dedicated more than half of his time to talk about the Armenian community (instead of talking about his own community), providing details about the number of Armenians in the country, where they meet and what they do, where they originally come from and at what level is their knowledge of Arabic language, etc. Ազատ-Հայը պատասխանում է ադրբեջանական համայնքի առաջնորդի խեղաթյուրումներին |

By Matt Kwong A creative arts centre in the Musaffah industrial zone is expected to ease the capital?s shortage of cheap studio space for emerging artists. Groundwork has already begun on the 650-square-metre warehouse dubbed the Art Hub, which is due to open next year and is the brainchild of Tini Meyer. Linda Stephanian, 28, an Armenian-Iranian sculptress and the manager of the Ghaf Art Gallery, has been waiting for something like the Art Hub since her arrival in Abu Dhabi in 2006. Most of her artist friends, she said, were forced to make room to work in their homes. Ms Stephanian works with air-hardening clay and papier-m?ch? in her kitchen and says the restricted space limits the scale of her creations. ?My works are mostly small because of the space. If I have bigger space, I?ll go for bigger sculptures.? Ms Stephanian has looked for space in Musaffah before, but could not find anything smaller than a whole warehouse. ?I couldn?t find a small space, but if [Art Hub] is affordable, I would definitely be looking for a studio there,? she said. ?I think it will be really well accepted here since I know maybe eight or 10 artists here who can?t find affordable studio space to rent.? Speaker of the UAE Federal National Council (FNC) Abdul Aziz Abdullah Al Ghurair and the Armenian ambassador to UAE Vahagn Melikian discussed on 25 August 2009 ways for enhancing relations and cooperation between the two countries, especially in the field of parliamentary affairs. They also reviewed the mechanisms that guarantee the development of relations between UAE and Armenia in the avenues of tourism and investment by tapping the vast resources of both countries in these sectors. Vahagn Melikyan conveyed Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair an invitation of the Speaker of Armenia?s parliament Hovik Abrahamyan to visit Armenia. The officials touched upon the formation of parliamentary friendship groups, as well as deepening the bilateral relations. The Armenian diplomat presented Al Ghurair the main directions of foreign and regional policy of Armenia. Al Ghurair stressed the interest of UAE in the development of multilateral relations with Armenia and the need to take effective steps in this direction. He shed light on the general elections made to the FNC in 2006 and the recent constitutional amendments, which gave the parliament more powers.
