UAE is a multi-cultural society, where many nationalities live side by side. In a wider region overshadowed by turmoil, UAE remains as an oasis of tolerance and cultural understanding. Students of many nationalities learn how to behave in a culturally diverse society.
A group of Armenian students in Choueifat International School took part in the “Cultural Day” celebrations on 05 March 2011 representing the Armenian Community. Volunteer ladies prepared traditional food and the students displayed it in the Armenian tent besides paintings, sculptures, hand-made souvenirs, books, maps, flags, etc.
All the students were wearing T-shirts with the words “I love Armenia“. Armenian music was running all the time. The students were proud of their identity and were eager to pass information about Armenia to the visitors. Their teachers were pleased to know that there is such an active Armenian group of students in the school.
Many community members helped the students. Daron Manjikian assisted in fixing the tent a day earlier. He also prepared a selection of Armenian songs. Raffi Haleblian provided the tourism promotional CD about Armenia (”The silent beauty”).
Despite the bad weather the kids and their parents remained in the tent until the end of the cultural day. The atmosphere at the Armenian tent was all fun. Students were introducing their heritage to classmates and other visitors. The Armenian alphabet, small sculptors made in the shape of pomegranates, Armenian carpet samples, etc., were displayed, beside a big picture of Sartarabad and an icon of William Saroyan and his famous quotation about the Armenians.
Many thanks to “Al Halal Meat” company. The cold cut meat was a donation from Nishan Basmajian, General Manager of Geghard General Trading.
