On his way to Afghanistan Minister of Defence of Armenia Seyran Ohanyan visited UAE Armenian Community in Sharjah.
Minister Ohanyan first visited the Saint Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Church of Sharjah and received a briefing about the history of the community which is dates back to the 1960s and the construction of the church in 1998. Currently, the church and the adjacent administrative and educational center is one of the three Armenian institutions in the UAE (the other two being the premises of the Armenian Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the St. Martyrs' Armenian Church in Abu Dhabi currently in its initial construction phase).
Ambassador Gegham Gharibjanian welcomed the visiting Minister and introduced him to the public. The Minister is known for his distinctive role in the military life in Karabakh and Armenia.
Minister Ohanyan hailed the community members and assured them that the Armenian armed forces are at full capacity and ready for defending the motherland.
Here are excerpts from his speech:
– We have learned both from our victories and failures. We have created a state and we are willing to develop it and make it as strong as possible. Our army is the only victorious army in the Caucasus area. We have created an army that can defend our borders without the need for intervention or help from third parties. All sections of our people had their contribution in the creation of the state and army.
– We have now an enhanced Armenian safety and security system. Diaspora Armenians can have great contribution in enhancing our national safety system.
– Azerbaijan is engaged in military rhetoric that can bring no benefit to the region and to the Azeri people itself. We are capable of defending our dignity up to the end.
– Wherever I go in the Diaspora I make a point to visit the Armenian communities. It is a joy that this meeting here in Sharjah coincided with the birthday of national hero Monte Melkonian, who is originally from the Diaspora and who have fought for the liberation of Karabakh.
– This would be my second visit to Afghanistan. We have taken roles on international level supporting peace keeping forces in several locations in the world such as in Iraq, Kosovo, Afghanistan etc. Although we are a small nation but we have firm belief in the necessity for securing peace in conflict zones, so that ordinary people can return to their normal life.
After the meeting several members of the community asked questions to which Minister Ohanyan answered as follows:
– Can you please elaborate about the role that Armenia as a state could play in helping the Syrian Armenians inside Syria besides the financial support?
The Armenian Government does it best to help the Syrian Armenians, especially those who have taken refuge in Armenia. We have also encouraged the “Help your Brother” program which aims at sending aid to Syrian Armenians in conflict zones. We are doing whatever possible within the framework where we can operate. There are limits that we cannot surpass, especially if the issue is related to bilateral relations with sovereign states. However, we use our influence so that reasonable conditions could be established in Syria.
– Is there any possibility for alternative military service for Diaspora Armenians who get Armenian citizenship at young age and therefore are obliged to serve in the army? (question asked by Azad-Hye)
The alternative military forms were implemented in the past for certain religious sects but this has been now reduced and in recent years there have been almost no one who has asked for such type of military service. There are no provisions for introducing alternative military service for other categories.
At the end of the meeting Chairman of the National Council of Sharjah and Northern Emirates Armenians Ara Keuseyan thanked the distinguished guests for this visit and gave him a commemorative gift. The Minister provided the community center with books highlighting the role of the army in building the statehood.

Հանդիպումից առաջ ՀՀ պաշտպանության նախարարն այցելեց Սբ. Գրիգոր Լուսավորիչ եկեղեցի և մոմավառություն կատարեց:
Քէօսէեան սրահում կայացած հանդիպման սկզբում ԱՄԷ-ում ՀՀ դեսպան Գեղամ Ղարիբջանյանը ներկայացրեց նախարար Սեյրան Օհանյանի երկարամյա գործունեությունն ու մեծ ներդրումը ՀՀ պաշտպանության, նրա դիրքերի ամրապնդման և ղարաբաղյան պատերազմի հաղթանակի ազգանվեր գործում:
ՀՀ պաշտպանության նախարարն իր ելույթում խոսեց Հայոց բանակի անցած քսանամյա ուղու, զինված ուժերի կայացման, Հայաստանի սահմանների պաշտպանության խնդիրների, ինչպես նաև միջազգային տարբեր խաղաղապահ ուժերում ՀՀ ԶՈւ իրականացրած առաքելության մասին:
