The literary world is mourning the loss of a poet, playwright, and author of Armenian Language and grammar textbooks, educator, school principal, editor, and cultural activist Zareh Melkonian.
Melkonian was born in 1922 in Aleppo, Syria, and passed away in Freemont California on Friday, March 30, 2012. He had just lost his wife and lifelong friend- Kohar early this year.
Melkonian was a true advocate of the Armenian language. His last last publication “In Tumult of Loneliness”, a collection of poems, was rewarded with the Haigashen Ouzounian Literary Award in poetry.
Melkonian had been a teacher of Armenian language and literature for 22 years and editor of “Shirag” literary periodical, published in Beirut, Lebanon, for 8 years (1956-1964).
As a prolific writer he published his first work in 1943 in Aleppo, Syria, when he was in his twenties. He continued his publications in Lebanon and USA. He is also the author of Armenian language textbooks, which continue to be used in many schools.
On 14 November 2010 the Los Angeles Chapter of the Tekeyan Cultural Association (TCA) organized a celebration to honor Zareh Melkonian on the occasion of his 70 years of service to the Armenian communities in Lebanon and the United States (Read Kevork Keushkerian's article in Mirror Spectator here)
During the event Berdj Cholakian, Zareh Melkonian?s former student, noted that there is a misconception that Melkonian?s poetry is difficult to understand. However, Cholakian argued, that Melkonian?s themes such as hope, love, death, God, patriotism, nationalism and senility are common subjects that we encounter in our daily lives. Cholakian noted that, contrary to public opinion, Melkonian?s poems are written with enjoyable simplicity.
Dr. Kevork Keshishian, who has known and worked with Melkonian for over 60 years, portrayed Melkonian as an honest, truthful, witty and courageous person who never hesitates to speak his mind. Melkonian?s writings, he argued, are the oasis in the Diaspora?s otherwise barren literary field.

Զարեհ Մելքոնեանը ծնած էր Հալէպ, Սուրիա, 1923-ին: Շրջանաւարտ ըլլալէ ետք Կիպրոսի Մելգոնեան Կրթական Հաստատութենէն, յաջողութեամբ աւարտած էր նաեւ Պէյրութի Ամերիկեան Համալսարանը: Տարիներ շարունակ հայերէն լեզու դասաւադած էր Հ.Բ.Ը.Միութեան Պէյրութի Յովակիմեան Մանուկեան եւ Դարուհի Յակոբեան վարժարաններէն ներս: 1964-էն սկսեալ, չորս տարի վարած էր Դարուհի Յակոբեանի տնօրէնութեան պաշտօնը: 1968-ին տեղափոխուած էր Տիթրոյթ, Միացեալ Նահանգներ եւ յաջորդող 15 տարիներուն յաջող կերպով կատարած էր Հ.Բ.Ը.Միութեան Ամերիկայի Միջին Արեւմտեան շրջանակի վարիչ-տնօրէնութիւնը:
Մելքոնեան յայտնի եւ բազմաբեղուն գրագէտ մըն էր, հրատարակուած ունենալով բանաստեղծական 12 հատոր (առաջինը լոյս տեսած 1943-ին), 13 թատրերգութիւններ, ինչպէս նաեւ գրադատական, հրապարակագրական եւ յուշագրական բազմաթիւ յօդուածներ: Ութը տարի շարունակ (1956-1964) խմբագրած էր Թէքէեան Մշակութային Միութեան Լիբանանի ?Շիրակ? գրական ամսաթերթը: Հեղինակած է նաեւ հայերէն լեզուի քերականութեան դասագիրքերու հանրայայտ շարք մը, որ շուրջ կէս դար, իբրեւ դասագիրք գործածուած է հայկական սփիւռքի գրեթէ ամբողջ տարածքին:
