Sar Sargsyan: We must save the old Armenian songs from oblivion

Sar Sargsyan: We must save the old Armenian songs from oblivion

Interview with young classical & pop singer, Sar Sargsyan, who is gradually being noticed in the Armenian musical scene (SAR means “mountain” in Armenian):

Meri Martirosyan

Azad-Hye

Born in the city of Hadrout in Artsakh (Karabakh), Saribek Sargsyan decided to be classical music vocalist at a tender age. Although none of his relatives were involved in music, little Saribek, his mother recalls, started talking and singing almost the same time. He received his early musical education at Komitas Musical School in Hadrout, after which he was enrolled in Sayat-Nova Music College in Stepanakert. Later he moved to Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, to accomplish his musical education at the well-known Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory, from where he graduated in 2007.

As early as 2005, he started appearing on the musical stage, after adopting the name SAR. A musician with lyrical baritone voice, Sar is 32 years old, has a lot to achieve and is ready to conquer international platforms.

-Sar, do you intend to do some changes in your style?

I started my career performing classical music, but during the last 3 years, and in parallel to classical music, I am also performing pop songs, derived or based on classical tunes. I am therefore a classical singer, who can perform the same piece differently, according to the audience. There are several world-famous singers who are known for performing in both styles (classical and pop) and are very successful in what they do. I would like to follow their path.

-It is known that the classical music is not popular and is not much in demand. What is your opinion on this?

Yes, unfortunately, this is true and the same applies everywhere. Maybe this is so, because each era is governed by a certain set of requirements and rules.

-Is it possible, for example, to perform a serenade in classical style?

Yes, of course. Myself, I have done serenades several times. There are many beautiful serenades that can be performed in classical way. This is possible in Armenian or international music, such as the works of Tchaikovsky and Mozart.

-Are you satisfied with the concerts you have done in Armenia and Artsakh (Karabakh)?

I have done many concerts but, as you may realize, they would always seem not enough for a singer.

-What is your main goal?

I want to make classical music more popular, to save old pop songs from oblivion, reproducing them using modern arrangements, but always remaining loyal to their original melodies and to the rules of classical music.

-Who usually listens to your work?

It is gratifying to know that people of different ages of life listen to my work, including youth.

-In which countries did you perform and where would you like to appear?

I performed in USA, Bulgaria, Georgia and Russia, either being invited by the Armenian communities in these countries or by the local authorities. I would like also to perform in the United Arab Emirates and in other countries.

-Your first CD named “Karot” is out now. Can you tell us about this work and how did you choose the title?

The CD consists of 12 songs, Armenian and Russian classical and pop performances. It carries the name of one of the songs. The element of nostalgia is noticeable in all songs. Based on that, I decided, after taking into consideration the viewpoint of the people who assisted me, to give the CD the most appropriate name “Karot”.

-According to your view, has there been enough effort to propagate the classical music?

Some effort is made, but, unfortunately, it is not enough. Even the established singers do not show the necessary support, and I am not referring her to financial aid, rather just few good words. Instead of encouraging, many of them dishearten their colleagues by claiming that it is not worth singing in that style. However, this only gives me strength to face the difficulties.

-Whom do you consider as your teacher?

Professor Svetlana Kolosaryan taught me in the Conservatory. I consider her as my teacher / mentor, who has taught me many things and whose advice and viewpoints I always consider.

-There are singers who had classical education, but, under the pressure of demand, start doing 6/8 music notes or rabiz music. Is it possible that one day you may do the same?

Although the classical music is not much in demand and there would be many difficulties and disappointments ahead of me, nevertheless, I do not believe that I will be following any other style.

-What are your plans for the near future?

Soon, one of my favorite songs (Hey, Artsakh) composed by Robert Amirkhanyan will be out in video clip. Of course, the shooting will take place in Artsakh (Karabakh), with the support of the Ministry of Culture there and will be dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the Artsakh liberation movement. I would like to perform this and my other songs in different countries. I would like the Diaspora Armenians to realize that we do not only possess modern pop or rabiz songs, but also many classical and old pop works, that have not been played for a long time.

TEXT IN ARMENIAN
