Catholicos Sahag II Khabayan: Catholicos of Cilicia (1903-1939)
Born in Kharpert in 1849 he was ordained Catholicos of Cilicia in the Monastery of Sis in 1903.
At that time the Catholicosate was in a very poor and neglected condition. The situation deteriorated even more after the Massacres of Adana in 1909.
During the Genocide 1915 Catholicos Sahag was exiled first to Aleppo, Idlib and Damascus and then back to Cilicia after the temporary withdrawal of the Turkish forces. He was obliged to leave Sis again in 1921 after the French withdrawal. He stayed in Aleppo where he restored the Prelacy.
In 1930 Catholicos Sahag moves to Antelias, Lebanon, the new location of the Catholicosate. He publishes “Hasg” periodical and revives Armenian education in Lebanon and Syria.
