Creating something new based on the past
When asked about who my teachers are, I always answer: Armenian medieval miniature painters and their works.
An interview with distinguished miniature painter Armen Daneghyan.

Mr. Daneghyan, kindly tell us about yourself.
I was born in 1967 in Yerevan. I can say that I chose my profession at a very early age. I have received my education in the art college and then in the art university and later in the fine arts academy…
Let?s talk about your participations in different collective exhibitions.
I have participated in different collective exhibitions in USA, Brazil, France and Iran. I have also participated in exhibitions in many other countries without actually being present.
What can you tell us about the fact that your style is a new statement in the art of miniature painting?
My friends often say that, but that in fact is true. Based on the Armenian medieval miniature painters’ works, I was able to create my own new and modern one. This is a new branch in the Armenian miniature painting that I have called “contemporary miniature painting”, that is, to move forward and create the new based on the old.
What kind of themes are your works about?
I have a number of series, each with a different theme; religious, patriotic, philosophic, holidays, Genocide. I have paintings dedicated to Armenia, works in the form of carpets; I also have a series about universal values?
Is there a certain theme you are dealing with presently?
I’m currently working on creating the twelve zodiac signs. I have already portrayed some of them, and I’m still working on some others; along with these, I’m also working on some other orders that I’ve received.
Being a distinguished artist, in your opinion what are the main elements that one should have in order to become a good miniature painter?
I believe that anyone with any given specialty should excel at whatever domain he is in. If he does not excel, that’s the worst thing ever. However, in general, one should be endowed with patience, talent and receive the equivalent education, keeping in mind that the teacher gives you only 50% of the knowledge, and for the rest, you need to work hard and come out of the limited way of thinking and unleash your imagination.
It’s interesting to know, have you ever thought about moving abroad? I believe you have had that chance.
I’m proud to be Armenian. Despite the fact that there are major difficulties in Armenia in my domain, I hope that one day, this and all the other arts will be appreciated the way they should be. So, instead of leaving, I wish that my dream would eventually come true here.

Ծնվել եմ 1967թ.-ին Երևանում: Կարելի է ասել, դեռ մանկուց ընտրել եմ իմ մասնագիտությունը: Համապատասխան բնագավառում կրթություն եմ ստացել արվեստի քոլեջում, ապա արվեստի համալսարանում, այնուհետև գեղարվեստի ակադեմիայում և այլն:
Խոսենք խմբակային ցուցահանդեսների Ձեր մասնակցության մասին:
Մասնակցել եմ տարբեր խմբակային ցուցահանդեսների այդ թվում` Ամն-ի-ում, Բրազիլիայում, Ֆրանսիայում, Իրանում: Որոշ երկրներում տեղի են ունեցել են նաև ցուցահանդեսներ, առանց իմ ներկայության:
Հայտնի է, որ ձեր ոճը կարծես թե մանրանկարչության մեջ նոր խոսք է, խոսենք այդ մասին:
Հաճախ ընկերներս են այդպես ասում, չնայած, որ դա իսկապես ճիշտ է: Ես ելնելով միջնադարյան հայ մանրանկարիչների աշխատանքներից ստեղծել եմ նորը՝ ժամանակակիցը: Սա հայ մանրանկարչության մեջ նոր մասնաճյուղ է, և ես անվանել եմ այն ժամանակակից մանրանկարչություն, այսինքն՝ առաջ շարժվելով ՝ անցյալի հիման վրա ստեղծել նորը:
Հիմնականում ի՞նչ թեմատիկայով աշխատանքներ եք պատրաստում:
Պատրաստում եմ տարբեր շարքեր, կրոնական, հայրենասիրական, փիլիսոփայական, տոների, ցեղասպանության, Հայաստանին նվիրված, խալիների տեսքով շարքեր կամ համամարդկային արժեքների շարք, և այլ տարաբնույթ թեմաներով:
Այժմ ինչ որ թեմա կա՞ , որ դրանով եք զբաղված:
Այժմ աշխատում եմ կենդանակերպերի 12 նշանների պատկերման վրա: Որոշները արդեն նկարել եմ, մի մասի վրա դեռ աշխատում եմ, զուգահեռ նաև այլ պատվերներ եմ կատարում:
Դուք լինելով վաստակաշատ մանրանկարիչ, ի՞նչ եք կարծում, ի՞նչ է անհրաժեշտ լավ մանրանկարիչ դառնալու համար:
Ես կարծում եմ ցանկացած մասնագիտության տեր մարդ իր բնագավառում պետք է վարպետ լինի, եթե նա վարպետ չե, դա ամենավատն է: Իսկ առհասարակ առաջինը պետք է ունենալ մեծ համբերություն, տաղանդ, համապատասխան կրթություն, հաշվի առնելով, որ ուսուցիչը գիտելիքի միայն 50%-ը կարող է փոխանցել, մնացածի համար անհրաժեշտ է աշխատասիրություն, այնուհետև դուրս գալ սահմանափակ մտածողությունից և զարկ տալ երևակայությանը:
Հետաքրքիր է երբևէ մտածե՞լ եք հայրենիքը փոխելու մասին, կարծում եմ նման հնարավորություն ունեցել եք:
Ես հպարտ եմ, որ հայ եմ: Չնայած նրան, որ Հայաստանում այս ոլորտի հետ կապված դժվարությունները հսկայական են, սակայն ավելի շատ ցանկություն (եթե կարելի այսպես ասել) ունեմ, որ թե այս, և թե առհասարակ ցանկացած մշակույթ Հայաստանում գնահատվի ըստ արժանավույն, գնալու փոխարեն այս մասին եմ մտորում, ու փափագում, որ ի վերջո կգա այդ օրը:
