Medical event in Dubai with the participation of Armenians

MEACO Congress9th International Congress of Middle-East African Council of Ophthalmology (MEACO) was held in Dubai Convention Center from 29th March – 1st April 2007.

 

From Aleppo, Syria, three Armenian ophthalmologists attended the event: Dr. Harout Balian, Dr. Sossy Der Artinian and Dr. Jeannine Srourian.

 

The Congress included instructional courses around many subjects like cornea, glaucoma, retina, neuro ophthalmology, orbital diseases and oculoplasty and the newest methods for cataract surgery.

 

The Congress included an exhibition for the newest machines and surgical instruments.

In the year 1989, all the national ophthalmological societies of the Arab countries came together to establish the Pan Arab Council of Ophthalmology (PACO), under the leadership of Dr. Akef El-Maghraby. Their aim was to unite ophthalmologists and ophthalmic societies throughout the Middle East and Africa.

 

In 1997, the board unanimously decided to merge the Council with the Afro-Arab Society of Ophthalmology and as a result, the Council was renamed as Pan Arab African Council of Ophthalmology (PAACO).

 

In 2005, the Iranian Ophthalmological Society, which has more than 1,200 members, formally joined the PAACO, which resulted in the renaming of the council to the Middle East African Council of Ophthalmology (MEACO).
