Lilit Pipoyan: Music is always with me; I hear songs even in my dreams

Interview with beloved singer, composer and arranger Lilit Pipoyan.

-You have a unique style, how did it emerge?

I basically choose songs that have been forgotten, or songs that have never been performed or have been performed only a few times, I usually go for composers from the beginning of the 20th century and I reinterpret their songs. I also have my own compositions.

-Today's youth know little about you and your songs. Is it because nowadays the taste has changed and the foppish, decadent style has become prominent, or is it because you rarely appear on TV platforms or the media?

I think they can find my songs on the internet if they want to. It can't get any easier. If I compare them to my generation, I remember the amount of effort we used to exert to find something, oh, how difficult it was to find new songs, being enclosed in the Soviet Union?.We used to search for, find and buy expensive disks so that we would keep abreast with what was new and fresh. Nowadays, they are so sluggish, and are not willing to search and find out what's already there.

-The taste in music has changed and has become really distressing, the standards of the song supply and demand are so “modest” that many have lost hope. Maybe that?s why they gave up on searching.

You've made an interesting point. Yes it is possible that this is a factor as well. But there are negative waves in the air. The internet, the main users of which are the youth, is filled with exaggerated criticism and dissatisfaction, but our reality is different than that. We shouldn't see the worst in everything. Maybe this is why the majority of people are disappointed and hopeless and have lost their aspiration to discover anything new.

As for not appreciating the real values, well, it was induced by the post-independence freedom, which was not well managed, since people were deprived of it during the Soviet regime. All the things that were forbidden before, like sex, violence, partying at the restaurants and similar stuff have become so overwhelmingly common now and – in a word – have given way to the instincts.

-What difficulties do you face often?

I'm alone in my art. I don't even have people who adhere to my ideas (music wise). I try to innovate things, I don't like singing covers. Of course a good interpretation is always worth the praise. I also don't like the artificial patriotism in art, where they shout “Armenia, Armenia” interminably. I like patriotism to be productive, decent and genuine, one that is creative, developing and developmental. If there are supporters, I'm ready to collect a team and organize open air (definitely open air and free) concerts and present entirely new music.

-When was the last time you had a concert outside Armenia (and in Armenia)?

I was in Los Angeles last October. I took part in a concert, the proceeds of which were going to be dedicated to Syrian Armenians, who have suffered the consequences of war. As for Armenia, I have been trying recently to perform in small concerts in different clubs. Of course, these aren't the kind of concerts that I have dreamed of. In fact, my abilities as an artist cannot fully find their expressions on the Armenian stages.

On this occasion, I'd like to say that I'm not the one who loses here (I can find my happiness in my art anyway), but my potential audience is.

-There's a kind of sorrow in your songs. Is that so?

That's not sorrow, that's drama; my songs are dramatic. I don't like sorrow, neither the word nor the phenomenon. As for the fact that they sound so, maybe because I inherited my parents' karma. Karma is the accumulated life experience that is passed on, it's the reflection of the life that our parents and their parents have lived.

My parents had a pretty difficult life, wars, losses, repressions? There's something emotive in them. For example, my father used to listen to a very dramatic piece by Beethoven all the time; he also worked on a huge painting about the Armenian Genocide for 20 continuous years? There are other stuff like this that have left their trace on me.

Don't Cry

Coming from the Mountain

Gulo (Koulo)

-Your songs are relieving, comforting and many say that they serve as remedies for the aching heart, how so?

Love and suffering are so closely interrelated, as for the healing moment, you know, art grants humans everything that is already happening to them but in a new form, and when the artist formulates a certain sensuous phenomenon, people understand what?s happening to them, which has a healing property.

-What could discourage you?

I'm regularly discouraged by betrayal, lies and especially pretense. I feel hopeless when my confidence leaves me.

What brings you out of that mood? Is it that huge imaginary hand that we keep dreaming of, which does not necessarily show up in the end? Have you ever noticed it?

It's not a hand, it's the potential of life that I have in me, that's what keeps you alive. You think about it and you realize that you can't be stuck in a pit forever, you stay and stay and then you ask yourself, “Till when?”. Sometimes I look around me and look for help. I have realized that no one can understand my own circumstances better than myself, I'm the only one who can solve my problems, since I'm the only one who's familiar with those conditions.

-The dialect you use in your songs is similar to the Western Armenian. When I first got to know your art, I thought you were from the Diaspora.

I have some songs in my repertoire, the lyrics of which are written by Western Armenian poets. Honestly speaking, the impression you had is a bit surprising for me. I love the Western Armenian literature, especially poetry, but I intentionally utter the Western Armenian with an Eastern Armenian pronunciation. I've never lived outside Armenia.

-Could you possibly tell us what the creative process is like?

It's really complicated, almost impossible to explain. It is born when I'm in a very special state of mind and soul. I'm talking mainly about the lyrics. It's when you feel the pulse of life. As for the music, it's always with me, I'm constantly singing something (to myself). At night, melodies loaf around in my head, I hear songs even in my dreams.
