-Hagop Baronian says that crying over our flaws is the biggest flaw of all. Do you agree?

I don't know in what context Baronian said this, but I believe that owning up to our mistakes and doing something to fix them is very important. It would probably be better if we did something without crying. Anyways, with or without crying, doing something to fix the flaw is what counts.

-Who do you prefer to be like in real life? Baronian's “Melidos Agha”, who is so polite that he ends up hurting himself or like Moliere's “Misanthrope”, who is so blunt that he ends up hurting everybody else?

I believe that being extremely frank can serve only one's own interests. Everybody can offend people with the excuse of honesty. It requires courage, but it lacks nobility or thoughtfulness, which are as important.
I believe that an artist should be as honest as possible when it comes to his art, as for society and the people who surround him, he should be as polite as one can be.

We have all witnessed the consequences of Baronian's politeness. When I was in Istanbul, I wanted to visit his tombstone, but no one seemed to know where he was buried. Priests had refused to formally bury him. Can you imagine?

-Is it the result of this honesty that in most of your shows you include really daring jokes about every kind of people and everything including God? Don't you think that certain people would find it offensive?

I'm aware that certain people would get hurt, but if I restrict myself and think of whom I will offend with every single joke, I'd rather quit my job, because there's always someone who won't get or like the joke.

-The renowned Russian writer Chekhov says that only people with a sense of humor can understand the depth of his tragedies. Did you also choose humor because your share of distress was great?

Most probably. There's great truth in Chekhov's saying. I also believe that the opposite is true as well. Only people who have a profound understanding of tragedies can appreciate my humor completely. I've always said that if I didn't have any pain, I would have no reason to turn to laughter.

I know this may sound harsh, but if you had to choose to give up one of your talents, which one would that be and why?

With great difficulty and pain, I would have to say acting. Because painting and writing are a must for me to cleanse my inner world.

If you found Aladdin's lamp, what would your three wishes be?

-Health
-Enough money to make those around me happy.
-And for my final wish, I'd ask for a few more of those lamps.

Whose opinion matters more regarding your writings, paintings and acting? The critics' or the spectators'?

The spectators' of course. Always the spectators'. And to be more honest, I can say that throughout the years, you make some good friends, whom you really respect and whose opinions you trust. So it's their opinion that matters the most.

There's an English saying: “If you run after two sheep, you'll catch neither”. You are living proof of the exact opposite. How can you be successful in more than one field at the same time?

Yes, there's the Armenian version as well. My father used to say that if you put two different meals in front of the donkey, it would starve to death. There's some truth to this. But if you are as stubborn or as “hungry” as I am, you would eat them all up. Speaking of art, sooner or later you realize that all forms of art complete one another. In a word, if you'd like to become an astronaut and a dentist, your life would get much more difficult.

It seems like you know the Armenian history so well and you are an ardent reader in general. How can you encourage the young today to read books despite all the distracting technology?

Yes, I'm an ardent reader. Reading is my greatest joy. I don't know if I have a good answer to your question. I can only say that if you give them a good book, an interesting one, they will definitely read it. What's important though is that love towards reading should be implanted in them during childhood. The moment the baby is born, he/ she should get to know what books are and what book culture is. He/she should be surrounded by books from day one.

In Mikayel Manvelian's famous novella “The Clown”, after making thousands of people laugh, the joker goes to see a psychiatrist, because he is so depressed. Is making people laugh gratifying or exhausting?

Well, both. Making people happy is definitely one of the most difficult things. That's why it is both gratifying and exhausting at the same time.

END OF THE INTERVIEW

May the art that you make and the laughs that you create, circle back to you -just like a boomerang- and fill your life with great joy.
