This is the title of one of Hagop Garabents?s (Hakob Karapents) short stories. I also remember another one of his stories, where the heroine Sona is a microbiologist born in Armenia, who goes to USA as a tourist and while visiting a New York exhibition, meets the USA born Armenian artist Hrant. Armenia is being assessed through the dialogue of two Armenians born into two different regimes. Sona considers Hrant to be an Armenian sprout that has been deprived of his homeland, and Hrant is filled with indignation at the idea of the USA born Irishmen, Italians and Poles who aren?t suffering from nostalgia; why are his mind and soul fixated on Ararat? ?Why Are We Armenians So Stubbornly Armenian???
On November the 4th, 2010, the Armenian Writers? Union organized in Yerevan an evening dedicated to Hagop Garabents? 85th anniversary. This was an evening we had all waited for to meet the ?Stubbornly Armenian? writer. Writing for Garabents was a struggle, and writing in Armenian, a liturgy. ?When you don?t write, you become estranged…? he said. The meeting with this profoundly humane and astonishingly still profound Armenian was organized by the Armenian Writers? Union and the Hamazkayin Armenian Educational and Cultural Union. After the speeches delivered by both Union?s presidents- Levon Ananyan and Lusin Kalstyan, the audience enjoyed speeches by other intellectuals who had known the writer personally and shared their touching stories about the kind of man he was. Avik Isahakyan, president of the Armenian Literature Institute, Intellectual writers- Seyranuhi Geghamyan, Krikor Janigian, Arevshat Avagyan, Artem Harutyunyan and Markar Sharabkhanian all shared their memoirs, through which one could sense the presence of Garabents, not only with the audience, but also in Armenia, as if he had come back to the homeland he had dreamed about for so long.
The evening was also accompanied by classical, Armenian and national music and song performances. The Yerevan Number ?6? School students? performance was a nice surprise, they were so proud to be studying in a school that carries the writer?s name and promised to always keep his fine reputation alive.
Garabents?s forefathers had moved from Shushi to Gantsak then to Meghri and later settled in the Iranian city of Tabriz. The writer had a hard time roaming from one place to another starting from Tabriz, thus repeating the destiny of his dynasty. His Short stories and novels reflect the hardships and wandering he had to face in the US. The writer had told Krikor Janigian many times that he dreamed of returning to Karabakh and living in Shushi, the cradle of his grandfathers.
Garabents has been to Armenia three times only; once in 1973, then in 1982 and once more in 1992 when he came to search for his roots in independent Armenia.
I remembered another line from his stores, where he says: ?My father was going to tell me something?, ?As far as I can remember, the conversations that my father and I had, never came to an end.? His fourth ?visit? to Armenia, was during this cozy evening, but the conversation between us? never came to an end. It will be over when the writer settles in Armenia once and for all, when ?as I am deeply convinced- all of his works are completely published.

Երբ Հայաստան գնաս, բարեւս տար Արարատին?

Սա Յակոբ Կարապենցի պատմուածքներից մէկի խորագիրն է, իսկ ես այս պահին յիշեցի Կարապենցի պատմուածքներից մէկ ուրիշը, որի հերոսուհին՝ Հայաստանում ծնուած մանրէաբան Սոնան, ԱՄՆ զբօսաշրջութեան գնալով, Նիւ Եօրքի ցուցահանդէսներից մէկում հանդիպում է Ամերիկայում ծնուած հայ նկարչին՝ Հրանդին: Հայաստանը արժեւորւում է երկու տարբեր վարչակարգերի ծնունդ հայերի զրոյցի ընթացքում: Սոնան Հրանդին համարում է հայրենի հողից զրկուած ծիլ, իսկ Հրանդն ընդվզում է՝ ինչո՞ւ հայրենաբաղձութեամբ չեն տառապում Ամերիկայում ծնուած իռլանդացին, իտալացին, լեհը, ինչո՞ւ է իր հոգեկան մտասեւեռումների գագաթը դարձել Արարատը.?Ինչո՞ւ է հայը այսքա՛ն յամառօրէն հայ? ?
2010 թուականի Նոյեմբերի 4ին Հայաստանի Գրողների միութիւնում տեղի ունեցաւ յուշ-ցերեկոյթ՝ նուիրուած Յակոբ Կարապենցի ծննդեան 85ամեակին: Վաղուց սպասուած հանդիպում ?յամառօրէն հայ? գրողի հետ: Գրելը պայքար էր համարում Կարապենցը, իսկ հայերէ՛ն գրելը՝ պատարագ.?Եթէ չգրես, պիտի ուծանաս??: Խորապէս մարդկային եւ զարմանալիօրէն միեւնոյն խորութեամբ հա՛յ մնացած գրողի հետ հանդիպումը կազմակերպել էին Հայաստանի Գրողների միութիւնն ու Համազգային հայ կրթական եւ մշակութային միութիւնը: Երկու միութիւնների նախագահներ Լեւոն Անանեանի եւ Լիլիթ Գալստեանի ելոյթներից յետոյ ներկաներս սիրով եւ վայելքով ունկնդիր եղանք սիրելի գրողի հետ անմիջական ծանօթութիւն եւ անձնական կապեր ունեցած, նրա մարդկային կերպարը մտերմութեան ժամերին բացայայտած մտաւորականների յուզիչ խօսքին. ՀՀ ԳԱԱ գրականութեան ինստիտուտի տնօրէն Աւիկ Իսահակեանի, մտաւորական-գրողներ Սեյրանուհի Գեղամեանի, Գրիգոր Ջանիկեանի, Արեւշատ Աւագեանի, Արտէմ Յարութիւնեանի, Մարգար Շարապխանեանի յուշերում եւ գնահատութեան խօսքերում ապրող Կարապենցն այդ օրը ոչ միայն հանդիսութեան դահլիճում էր՝ ներկաների կողքին, այլեւ իրապէ՛ս եկաւ Հայաստան, եկաւ իր այնքա?ն երազած հայրենիքը:
Հանդիսութեանն առանձին համ եւ բոյր տուեցին համաշխարհային դասական, հայկական ժողովրդական եւ գուսանական երաժշտութեան նմուշների կատարումները: Հաճելի անակնկալ էր Երեւանի թիւ 6 դպրոցի աշակերտների ելոյթը. նրանք հպարտ են, որ սովորում են Յակոբ Կարապենցի անունը կրող դպրոցում, եւ երդուեցին մշտապէս բարձր պահել սիրելի գրողի անունը:
Յակոբ Կարապենցի նախապապերը Շուշիից տեղափոխուել են Գանձակ, ապա Մեղրի, այնուհետեւ հանգրուանել Իրանի Թաւրիզ քաղաքում: Դեգերումների երկար ու տառապալից ուղի է անցել Թաւրիզում ծնուած գրողը՝ կրկնելով իր տոհմի ու իր ժողովրդի ճակատագիրը: Ամերիկեան թափառումների ամբողջ ցաւը յորդել է նրա պատմուածքների եւ վէպերի էջերին: Հայրենի մտաւորական Գրիգոր Ջանիկեանն իր սրտառուչ խօսքում նշեց, որ Կարապենցը հանդիպումների եւ զրոյցների ընթացքում բազմիցս իրեն ասել է, որ ուզում է վերադառնալ Արցախ, ապրել Շուշիում՝ իր պապերի օրրանում:
Յակոբ Կարապենցը հայրենիքում եղել էր ընդամէնը երեք անգամ: 1973 եւ 1989 թուականներին ժամանել էր որպէս ամերիկեան պաշտօնեայ, երրորդ անգամ՝ 1992ին եկել էր իր արմատները փնտռելու անկախացած հայրենիքում:
Ես յիշեցի Կարապենցի ?Հայրս ինձ մի բան պիտի ասէր? պատմուածքի մի տողը. ?Որքան յիշում եմ՝ իմ եւ հօրս միջեւ խօսակցութիւնը երբեք աւարտին չէր հասնում?: Նրա չորրորդ ?այցը? Հայաստան կայացաւ այս ջերմիկ մթնոլորտում, սակայն խօսակցութիւնը մեր եւ նրա միջեւ?աւարտին չհասաւ: Զրույցը կ?աւարտուի այն ժամանակ, երբ նա վերջնականապէս կը հաստատուի Հայաստանում: Իմ խորին համոզմամբ՝ երկերի ամբողջական հրատարակութեամբ:
