Today, we will discuss his book “Alexander Mantashyants. Memoirs, Publications, Documents” published in 2011.
Why did you choose Alexander Mantashyants? What's the purpose?
The Armenian economical culture has a written history of 25 centuries. Its derivative, i.e. philanthropy, has a written history of 17 centuries. The first benefactor was His Holiness Catholicos Nerses the Great and I can assure you that Alexander Mantashyants has been the greatest Armenian employer and benefactor of all times. I am not just saying that, I have investigated the great history of our economical culture in 80 countries of the modern world, and the patterns related to the emergence, survival and the development of Diaspora. I insist on this based on pure scientific investigations. It suffices to say that A. Mantashyants has helped others for 45 years (from the age of 24 till the day he died.)
There are countless facts related to his philanthropy that I have gathered along the years and put together in the book. The greatness of that man was that he had a big fortune (22-30 million rubles) but even a bigger heart. He has helped a big number of young people receive education in a school in Tbilisi which was named after his family. He has also sent hundreds of talented young students to continue their studies in the European universities.
He was one of those unique people, who was loved and respected by everyone during his lifetime. We are used to describe authors, artists, musicians as “genius”, but A. Mantashyants was the genius of our economical culture, who has unfortunately been completely forgotten in our days.
April 19th last year marked the 100th anniversary of his death and nobody said or did a thing. March 3rd, 2012 marked the 170th anniversary of his birth and again, silence was prevailing. I consider it my mission to help remind the people about this great man.
I am personally familiar with the book and I can only imagine the great efforts you exerted.
The value of the book lies in the fact that it is completely based on documents. It contains information about his benevolent acts and memoirs, recently acquired testimonies. I have also written about his wife and eight children. I designed the book myself. Unfortunately the book is expensive but I'm quite content with the quality, it's such an inviting book.
I know that you have other unpublished works that are the result of a long period of work. Aren't you considering publishing them?
I have collected 4000 pages of documents. I have published ten books and I still have ten more to publish. It's no secret that the main problem is the finane. In my book “Glimpses into the Armenian Merchantry History” I have tackled the activities of the Armenian trade in many countries. But I have left out India, Russia and Persia; people need to know about these countries too.
What are your future plans?
I'm working on translating the book “Alexander Mantashyants, Memoirs, Publications, Documents” into Russian and English. I don't want to talk about my other projects yet.
Don't you doubt that the other ones won't be published? Would you be able to find a sponsor?
I always have doubt but it's not about finding a sponsor. The main difficulty about this personality is to find a benefactor that is equivalent to Mantashyants' greatness, in other words, a benefactor whom we can call the Mantashyants of today.

Ինչու՞ հենց Ալեքսանդր Մանթաշյանց, ո՞րն էր նպատակը:
Հայոց տնտեսական մշակույթն ունի 25 դարի գրավոր պատմություն, դրա ածանցյալը` բարգործությունը՝ 17 դարի: Առաջին բարերարը Ներսես Մեծ կաթողիկոսն է, և ամենայն պատասխանատվությամբ կարող եմ հայտարարել, որ Ալեքսադր Մանթաշյանցը բոլոր ժամանակների ամենախոշոր ձեռնարկատերն ու բարերարն է։ Սա մերկապարանոց հայտարարություն չէ, ես ուսումնասիրել եմ ժամանակակից աշխարհի 80 երկրներում դարերի ընթացքում ձևավորված մեր բացառիկ տնտեսական մշակույթի պատմությունը, սփուռքի առաջացման, գոյատևման ու զարգացման օրինաչափությունները, և իմ պնդումը հիմնված է զուտ գիտական հետազոտման վրա։ Բավական է ասել, որ Ա. Մանթաշյանցը, բարերություն է արել 45 տարի շարունակ, այսինքն քսանչորս տարեկանից մինչ իր մահը:
Նրա բարերարության հետ առնչվող բազմաթիվ փաստեր տարիների ընթացքում եմ ժողովել եմ ու հրապարակել գրքում: Այդ մարդու մեծությունն այն էր, որ ինչքան փող ուներ /22-30 մլն ռուբլի/, այնքան էլ՝ խիղճ: Նա մեծ թվով պատանիների է կրթություն ստանալու հնարավորություն է ընձեռել Թիֆլիսի՝ իր ազգանունը կրող առևտրային դպրոցում, հարյուրավոր տաղանդաշատ երիտասարդների ուսման է ուղարկել Ռուսաստանի ու Եվրոպայի բուհեր։
Նա այն եզակի մարդկանցից էր, ով կենդանության օրոք վայելում էր համաժողովրդական սեր ու հարգանք:
Մենք սովոր ենք հանճարներ անվանել գրողներին, նկարիչներին, երաժիշտներին, ?դասական? մշակույթի այլ գործիչներին, սակայն Ա. Մանթաշյանցը մեր տնտեսական մշակույթի հանճարն է, որը, ցավոք, մեր օրերում լիակատար մոռացության է մատնվել:
2011-ի ապրիլի 19-ին լրացավ նրա մահվան 100-ամյակը՝ քար լռություն: 2012-ի մարտի 3-ին լրացավ նրա ծննդյան 170-ամյակը, և նորից նույն պապանձն տիրեց։ Իմ խնդիրն եմ համարում այդ մեծագույն մարդուն մոռացությունից փրկելը։
Ինքս ծանոթ եմ գրքին և գիտեմ ինչ մեծ աշխատանք եք կատարել:
Գրքի արժեքը կայանում է այն բանում, որ ամբողջովին հիմնված է փաստական նյութի վրա, բացի իմ աշխատությունից։ Ես զետեղել եմ նրա բարերարությունների և բարերարյալների վերաբերյալ նյութեր, հուշագրություններ, ժամանակակիցների վկայություններ, անդրադարձել եմ նրա տիկնոջը և ութ զավակներին և այլն։ Անգամ՝ գրքի ձևավորումն եմ ինքս կատարել։ Դժբախտաբար, հրատարակության տպաքանակը սուղ է, ինքնարժեքը՝ բարձր, բայց պոլիգրաֆիական որակից գոհ եմ, շքեղ գիրք է։
Ես գիտեմ, որ Դուք ունեք նաև մեծ ուսումնասիրության արդյունք հանդիսացող այլ անտիպ աշխատանքներ, չե՞ք պատրաստվում նաև դրանց կյանքի կոչել:
Միայն չորս հազար էջ փաստական նյութ ունեմ ժողոված: Տասը գիրք հրատարակել եմ և այդքան էլ մնացել է։ Ոչ ոքի համար գաղտնիք չէ, որ հիմնական խնդիրը ֆինանսների չգոյությունն է: Շատ եմ ափսոսում: Դիցուք, ?Ակնարկներ հայ վաճառականության պատմության? գրքիցս, որտեղ անդրադարձել եմ տասը երկրներում հայոց առևտրատնտեսական գործունեությանը, դուրս մնացին այնպիսի կարևորագույն գաղթօջախներ, ինչպիսիք են Հնդկաստանինը, Ռուսաստանինը, Պարսկաստանինը…
Ի՞նչ ծրագրեր ունեք:
Աշխատում եմ ?Ալեքսանդր Մանթաշյանց. հուշագրություններ, հրապարակումներ, փաստաթղթեր? գրքի ռուսերեն և անգլերեն թարգմանությունների ուղղությամբ, մյուս ծրագրերի մասին չեմ խոսի։
