Our intention is not to blame any of them, but we cannot be indifferent towards those who have stayed and kept on practicing their cherished professions.
An interview with gynecologist, obstetrician and women?s surgeon- Doctor Melkon Kalayjian
Born in 1964, Aleppo-Syria. He graduated from A.G.B.U. Lazar Najarian-Calouste Gulbenkian high school and left for Armenia to study in the Mkhitar Heratsi Medical University. After graduating, he returned to his hometown in 1990 to specialize in the Aleppo State Hospital and in 1996, he was certified by the Damascus Health Ministry as an obstetrician, gynecologist and women's surgeon. Later, when he was performing his military service, he worked at the Aleppo Military Hospital and simultaneously managed to open his own clinic and start his private practice. Until 2011 (until it was shut down) he was a resident at the Aleppo Gulbenkian Hospital.
He is married and father of a son and a daughter.

How much has the birth rate, especially in the Armenian community in Aleppo, plummeted this past year?
Compared to the previous years, the number of Armenian babies that I have delivered hasn't gone down, on the contrary, I can say that it has increased by 10-15%.
Your job is ranked among the world's most difficult professions. How much harder has it gotten for you recently?
Every job has its ups and downs; the only difficulty nowadays is when I am called in for emergency cases in the middle of the night. I'm talking about the safety issue here.

What do you attribute being so successful to? Your certificate or experience or the fact that you're so patient and meticulous?
I attribute 50% of my success to my certificate and specialty, 25% to my experience and 25% to being patient and meticulous.
Why do a lot of women today opt for c-section delivery? I know for a fact that you do not encourage it unless it's really necessary.
Many pregnant women opt for a c-section delivery driven by their fear of labor pain, also in order not to experience vaginal enlargement. By the way, sometimes it's the husband who asks for it. Of course there is also the obstetrician's encouragement, so he would make more money by exerting less effort.

Why is a doctor's handwriting almost always illegible?
Maybe in order to finish writing quickly and get back to practicing medicine, after all a doctor's job is to cure and heal, and maybe in order to torment the pharmacists a bit?
Does the fact that you're still working in Aleppo imply that you are optimistic about the future of the country?
The main reason I stayed in Aleppo is my love for my homeland Syria and my faithfulness to my oath. There is still a big Armenian community in here that is in need of people with a scientific degree. There is also my Armenian and non-Armenian patients' demand, who keep asking me not to leave Aleppo. I've always been optimistic about the future of Syria. God willing, this crisis will come to its peaceful end soon.

2012-ին, մեծ թիւով Հայեր, ընդ որում բժիշկներ, հեռացան քաղաքէն, իրենց ու իրենց ընտանիքներուն համար աւելի նպաստաւոր պայմաններ փնտռելու համար: Ի հարկէ մեր նպատակը հեռացողները այպանել չէ բնաւ, բայց նաեւ չենք կրնար չգնահատել բոլոր անոնք ովքեր մնացին իրենց գործին գլխուն եւ շարունակեցին իրենց նուիրական աշխատանքը:

Ծնած է Հալէպ 1964-ին եւ յաճախած Լազար Նաճարեան Գալուստ Կիւլպենկեան Վարժարանը, ապա մեկնած է հայրենիք եւ աւարտած Երեւանի Մխիթար Հերացու անուան բժշկական համալսարանը. 1990-ին վերադառնալով Հալէպ, մասնագիտացած է Հալէպի պետական ծննդատան մէջ եւ 1996-ին վկայուած է Դամասկոսի Առողջապահութեան Նախարարութեան կողմէ որպէս մանկաբարձ, կնախտաբան եւ կանանց վիրաբոյժ: Մեկնելով զինծառայութեան, աշխատած է Հալէպի զինուորական հիւանդանոցը միեւնոյն ժամանակ ունենալով իր սեփական դարմանատունը. Մինչեւ 2011 (մինչեւ փակուիլը) եղած է Կիւլպենկեան ծննդատան մշտական բժիշկներէն:

Այսօրուայ ձեռք բերած ձեր մեծ յաջողութիւնը ինչի՞ն կը վերագրէք. Ձեր վկայականի՞ն, ունեցած տարիներու փորձառութեա՞ն թէ այն փաստին որ դուք չափազանց համբերատար էք եւ բծախնդիր:
Յաջողութեանս 50%-ը կրնամ վերագրել վկայականիս եւ մասնագիտութեանս, 25%-ը տարիներու փորձառութեանս եւ 25%-ը համբերութեան եւ բծախնդրութեան:

Ոմանք կը խուսաբին արտաքին սեռական գործիքներու ձեւափոխութենէն (նկատի ունիմ հեշտոցի լայնացումը), ի մէջ այլոց, երբեմն ամուսինն է որ այդ մեկը կը պահանջէ. Իհարկ է կայ նաեւ կարգ մը բժիշկիներու քաջալերանքը, որոնք քիչ ճիգ թափելով շատ շահիլ կը մտադրեն:

Մինչեւ այսօր ձեր Հալէպ գտնուելէն ու աշխատանք շարունակելէն կրնա՞նք ենթադրել թէ լաւատես էք երկրին ապագայով:
Հալէպ մնալուս հիմնական պատճառը նախ սէրս է Սուրիական հայրենիքիս հանդէպ եւ հաւատարմութիւնս բժշկական երդմանս: Տակաւին Հալէպի մէջ հայկական գաղութ կայ որը կարիքը ունի գիտական մասնագիտութիւն ունեցող մադկանց. Կայ նաեւ իմ Հայ եւ ոչ Հայ հիւանդներուս պահանջքը եւ թելադրանքը որ չլքեմ Հալէպը: Ես միշտ լաւատես եղած եմ Սուրիոյ ապագային նկատմամբ… Տա Աստուած, այս տագնապը շուտով հասնի իր խաղաղ աւարտին:
?…Եթէ հաւատարիմ մնամ երդմանս՝ թող երջանիկ կեանք մը ու փայլուն ասպարէզ մը ունենամ եւ արժանանամ գովասանքի??
